Natalia Golova, MD, and Pamela High, MD, of Brown Medical School, offered a presentation on encouraging the development of young children, while stressing the importance of reading, at Parenting Matters 2005: Practical Information for Raising Children. This is an overview of their presentation.

The presentation began with a discussion about the recent interest in coordinating neurosciences with developmental research and the continuing nature versus nurture debate in regards to child development.

Golova and High asserted that brain development in children is dependent on both genetics and experience. Brain development begins before birth, but the first three years of a child's life are crucial. Children's experiences in these years create the foundation needed to continue development throughout their lives. Therefore, Golova and High affirm that child development is 100 percent nature and 100 percent nurture.
