Dr. Shank , the former Chairman of the Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology at Brown University, is currently Professor of Medical Science and Associate Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences at Brown. He has been Director of the Brown University Biosafety Level 3 AIDS Laboratory since 1988. Dr. Shank has been a key member of the CFAR faculty since its inception, and his laboratory has provided mentorship to a number of the CFAR's developmental award recipients.

Dr. Shank has been a member of the Brown faculty since 1978. His research in retrovirology began prior to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. His earlier research focused on the mechanism of action of the tat gene. (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci.USA. 85: 8291-8295, 1989; J. Virol. 64: 4565-4567, 1990). More recently, Dr Shank has investigated CD4-Independent Infection of Human B Cells by HIV-1 (AIDS Res Human Retroviruses, 2001). Dr. Shank has served on several NIH committees and study sections. Recently, he was awarded a major research facilities construction grant from NIH (1C06RR015471-01) to build the new Brown University Life Science Building.
