Overview
The Lifespan/Tufts/Brown CFAR consists of seven separate cores. All CFAR members are eligible to utilize core services. Please contact Core Directors for more information on how to access specific core services.
The ADMINISTRATIVE CORE provides the administrative infrastructure necessary for the success of the CFAR, establishes and maintains communication channels between the other cores, provides financial and grant management of the CFAR, and coordinates the strategic planning process.
The DEVELOPMENTAL CORE provides developmental awards through a peer-review process in order to encourage new research and attract new investigators to HIV/AIDS research, as well as provide mentoring opportunities to Junior Faculty members.
The HIV & WOMEN CORE supports basic and clinical research focusing on HIV treatment, progression, and complications in women.
The PREVENTION SCIENCES CORE coordinates the prevention science research activities, trains Fogarty fellows and local new investigators in HIV and STD diagnostic techniques, coordinates and manages the serodiagnostic lab repository including blood and genital tract secretions.
The NUTRITION, METABOLISM & GI CORE provides services to support AIDS research projects by CFAR investigators at Tufts, Brown, and international sites. The network of research on HIV and nutrition/metabolism has expanded to include work in hepatology, pharmacology, cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive function related to nutrition, and applied HIV virology related to clinical outcomes and metabolism. In addition, assistance with international studies and pharmaceutical studies in relation to Nutrition, Metabolism & GI is available.
The OUTCOMES AND BIOSTATISTICS CORE provides services, consultation and collaboration related to quantitative aspects of HIV research for faculty affiliates of the Lifespan/Tufts/Brown CFAR. Core activities and expertise are wide ranging, and include selection and evaluation of outcome measures, construction of project databases (including web-based entry), design and analysis of studies using various designs (e.g. clinical trial, observational study, laboratory experiments), and implementation of models and methods for cost effectiveness and decision making.
The RETROVIROLOGY SERVICES CORE, provides services to support basic and translational research. Services are based on needs of CFAR users and cutting edge assays. The Core provides services to support studies of HIV persistence during highly active antiretroviral therapy, studies of the effect of small interfering (si) RNA molecules on viral replication, studies of HIV infection on T lymphocytes, and studies of HIV infection on neural tissues.
