Abstract

Dr. Atwood has sought to define the role of chemokine receptors in mediating infection of glial cells by T-cell, macrophage, and dual tropic strains of HIV-1. He has also sought to define the mechanism of infection of astrocytes by HIV-1. Dr Atwood and his laboratory have demonstrated that the low efficiency of astrocyte infection by HIV-1 is due to inefficient viral entry in the absence of the prototypical receptors. He has postulated that the identification of the mechanism of infection in this cell line may lead to the development of reagents useful in identifying astrocytes in vivo which may harbor HIV genomes. He has successfully secured NIH funding as a co-investigator (P20 RR015578).
