Brown-Kenya Collaborative Medical Exchange Program

The most recent international program with CFAR co-sponsorship is the Brown-Kenya Collaborative Medical Exchange Program.

In 1990, the Indiana University School of Medicine Faculty, with leadership from the Division of General Internal Medicine, forged a collaboration with the Moi University Faculty of Health Sciences Program in Eldoret, Kenya. Moi University Medical School was established in 1990. It has developed an innovative curriculum focused on problem-based learning and community-based health care. The first class graduated in the fall of 1997.

Eldoret is a city of 100,000. It is a place of disquieting contrasts. Great needs and great hopes co-exist there. Eldoret is located to the west of the Great Rift Valley in western Kenya. The 7,000 ft elevation is a blessing: it gives relief from the equatorial heat. Days are sunny and nights are cool.

Through a recent partnership between Brown Medical School and Indiana University, the Brown Medical School has been able to set up its own unique program in Kenya - also in collaboration with Moi University. It is open to Brown medical students as well as residents and faculty from both Tufts and Brown University medical schools. The focus of the Brown program is on HIV/AIDS and TB research, training and treatment with a particular focus on the problems of opportunistic infections in a resource poor setting. The Brown program is under the direction of E. Jane Carter, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Brown and Director of the new RISE TB Clinic at The Miriam Hospital. Dr. Carter is a pulmonologist by training and is now working on the issue of HIV-TB co-infection.

The program is open to medical students for an eight week rotation, medical residents for a one month rotation, and faculty for a one month rotation.
