Giving to Hasbro Children's Hospital

A Message from Our Pediatrician-In-Chief

Aaron Friedman, MDOn Medicine and Mutual Cooperation

Strong and fruitful partnerships are at the center of Hasbro Children’s Hospital’s success as a nationally recognized pediatric resource. Over the years, we have continued to beneficially partner with the community, universities and fellow hospitals in order to provide our patients with superior multi-dimensional and multi-optional care.

Hasbro Children’s, in connection with Rhode Island Hospital, has a close working relationship with Women & Infants’ Hospital. At our facilities, we strive to reduce barriers to pediatric care by coordinating services across our health care systems. Children who are treated at our hospital have access to resources, physicians and services that all three facilities have to offer. This is a special relationship that benefits all of southern New England.

Our hospital is routinely recognized as one of the best resident training facilities in the country for both general medicine and surgery. Every year, more that 400 of the best and brightest medical students compete for 16 general pediatrics residency places at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The 16 who are chosen are exposed to one of the busiest pediatric emergency departments in the nation, and an all-around cutting edge facility. Our hospital is a great place to learn. As a result, we retain a large number of the talent who train here, far more than would normally be expected for a state of our size. Through the cultivation of our educational relationships, we continue to perpetuate the finest care through the generations.

As a result of our relationship with Brown Medical School, exciting research projects are underway that are improving patient care and solidifying Hasbro Children’s Hospital as a national presence. I feel strongly that it is our responsibility to advance knowledge and I am proud of what is being accomplished in clinical research. An example of such work is that of Robert Klein, MD, in the area of pediatric asthma. His investigation into the relationship between asthma education and the decreased need for emergency care is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and is nationally recognized.

Hasbro Children’s Hospital has always been an important community resource for Rhode Islanders, and it has remained so as it has expanded into a regionally and nationally recognized pediatric facility. I often reflect upon our relationship with the community and the community’s relationship with us. The partnership is built, and must be built, upon the hospital providing the absolute best in care, education and research, in collaboration with members of the community supporting our endeavors in the most comfortable way that they can. This relationship is a continuous dialogue, a two-way street of mutual cooperation and an essential partnership for both parties.
