Education at Hasbro Children's Hospital

Robert Klein, MD

Welcome to Hasbro Children's Hospital!

Hasbro Children's Hospital is the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, a Lifespan partner. It is Rhode Island's premier pediatric facility.

The seven-story, 87-bed hospital offers a wide range of pediatric services and programs in all medical and surgical subspecialties. Annually, the hospital cares for, on average, 6,500 inpatients and 70,000 outpatients. More than 41,000 pediatric patients are seen in the emergency department each year.

Our hospital is routinely recognized as one of the best training facilities in the country. Every year, more than 400 medical students compete for 16 general pediatric residency places at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The 16 who are chosen are exposed to one of the busiest pediatric emergency departments in the nation, and an all-around cutting edge facility. As a result, we retain a large number of the talent who train here, far more than would normally be expected for a state of our size. Additionally, there are numerous subspecialty opportunities for fellowship training. Through the cultivation of our educational relationships, we continue to perpetuate the finest care through the generations.

As a result of our relationship with Brown Medical School, not only do we attain the best in pediatric residents, we also are involved in exciting research projects that are improving patient care and solidifying Hasbro Children’s Hospital as a national presence. I feel strongly that it is our responsibility to advance knowledge and I am proud of what is being accomplished in clinical research.

Hasbro Children’s, in connection with Rhode Island Hospital, has a close working relationship with Women & Infants’ Hospital, a specialty hospital for infants and women. Women & Infants' is immediately adjacent to Hasbro Children's and offers a 60-bed neonatal intensive care unit, one of the busiest in New England. A new, state-of-the-art NICU, scheduled to open in 2009, will be housed on two of the five stories of a 140,000 square foot building.

At our facilities, we strive to reduce barriers to pediatric care by coordinating services across our health care systems. Children who are treated at our hospital have access to myriad resources, physicians and services. This is a special relationship that benefits all of southern New England, as well as those who train here.

Thank you for your interest in our program.
