Hospital/School Partnership Will Benefit Children with Asthma
A $466,140 matching grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to
the Draw A Breath/Providence School Partnership is supporting a unique,
collaborative effort to bring asthma management and education to
Providence school children and their families. The grant was matched by
the Rhode Island Foundation, Health and Education Leadership for
Providence (HELP) and the Rhode Island Hospital Foundation. Draw A Breath will work with 25 Providence public elementary
schools to identify 1,000 children with moderate to severe asthma. The
goal is to decrease the number of missed school days, reduce
hospitalization and limit the effects of the disease. Asthma, the most common chronic disease of children, is most severely
felt among low-income children. Lack of access to consistent health care,
rundown housing, environmental conditions, and the stresses associated
with poverty are known to make asthma worse. Although it is responsible for an increasing number of missed
school days and hospital visits, the fact is that asthma is treatable.
With extensive education and innovative management strategies, most
children with asthma can live normal and active lives. The Draw A
Breath/Providence School Partnership will provide children and their
families with those tools.
