The Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center
When I think back 17 years ago, when I started in labor and delivery, I
am amazed at the many positive changes. We are the proud tenants of a
beautiful, state-of-the-art Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center, in which all the rooms are
LDRPs (labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum) and that has its own
Cesarean section operating room. We have a nursery in close proximity to
our moms that can be used as much or as little as our new moms wish. We
encourage family bonding, so that parents can feel confident in their
abilities as new parent as they take their newborns home with them. Our
laboring moms can "enjoy" a variety of birth options. All rooms
have Jacuzzis to ease the discomforts of labor. We also offer a sisal
ball, birthing stool, water births, a spacious family birthing bed and
epidurals.
We offer an extensive education program, featuring classes in
childbirth, breastfeeding, Cesarean sections, infant care, infant CPR,
sibling adjustment and Safe Sitter (a nationally sponsored babysitting
program). We hold ongoing support groups for breastfeeding and infant
bereavement. Our staff also holds community outreach programs for
hepatitis B vaccinations and infant car seat safety checks.
We enjoy a highly skilled and educated staff. All our RNs are NALS
(neonatal advanced life support) certified. Many are childbirth educators,
IBCLCs (international board-certified lactation consultants), bereavement
educators, and many hold special certification in obstetrics. We also have
a core group who is certified to scrub on Cesarean sections. Our medical
staff includes several obstetricians, Navy and civilian family practice
physicians, pediatricians and a certified nurse midwife.
Perhaps the best description of the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center is from a recent
newspaper article on a statewide patient satisfaction survey, calling it the "the real jewel in the crown of Newport
Hospital."
