24-hour service for adult patients in psychiatric crisis

If you, a family member or friend are suffering one or more of these or
another psychiatric illness, or if you suspect your patient is, contact the
Acute Psychiatry Service (APS) at Rhode Island Hospital. The APS provides urgent
and emergent diagnostic evaluations, crisis management and referral to a
treatment program tailored to the individual.
Our attending psychiatrist and master's level clinicians are committed to
finding the least restrictive environment in which patients may be safely and
effectively treated.
All emergency referrals are seen within two hours and all urgent referrals
are seen within 24 hours.
APS Evaluations
Because of our locationadjacent to the emergency department at Rhode Island
Hospitalthe APS is uniquely capable of working with emergency staff when
necessary to
evaluate quickly both primary psychiatric illness
and the complex interplay of medical and psychiatric issues to obtain a thorough
and efficient medical evaluation prior to formulation of treatment
recommendations.
Similar to an outpatient office setting, the APS suite provides psychiatric
patients with a private space for their initial evaluation.
Through Lifespan Behavioral Health Services, the APS utilizes a wide range of
multidisciplinary treatment programs. These include talk therapy, medication,
day hospital treatment and inpatient treatment.
