Gamma Knife Q&A

What is the Gamma Knife?
How does it work?
Is it safe?
Where can I get this treatment?

Gamma Knife surgery has many advantages over open surgery; the risk of complications is less and it is a gentler form of treatment for the patient. Gamma Knife surgery can normally be performed in a day, and the convalescence time is extremely short.

Gamma Knife staff members at the New England Gamma Knife Center at Rhode Island Hospital have prepared this information so patients will be able to better prepare for their Gamma Knife procedure and know what to expect before, during and after treatment. We've also included a glossary of terms associated with Gamma Knife treatment.

We are happy to answer any questions that are not covered in this guide, and we encourage you to call the center at 401-444-4257. The New England gamma Knife Center is affiliated with the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island, The Miriam and Newport Hospitals.
