Cardiothoracic Surgery
Our Procedures
Below is a partial listing of our most
common procedures:
Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the
United States. Our cardiothoracic surgeons provide an innovative
array of treatment options:
- arterial revascularization
- coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- combination therapy with catheter-based techniques
- internal mammary arterial (unilateral and bilateral) bypass
grafting
- off bypass CABG (beating heart surgery)
- radial artery grafts for CABG
- sequential grafting
- various minimally invasive techniques (see minimally
invasive surgeries). Currently about 25% of all cardiac
surgeries at Rhode Island Hospital are performed with minimally
invasive techniques or off pump.
Valvular Disease
We offer a wide range of valve choices and the depth of expertise
to go along with them. The different valve replacements, reconstructions
and transplants we offer:
- homograft valve reconstruction (human valve transplants)
- Ross procedure
- semi-stentless valves
- stentless valves
- complex left ventricular outflow tract reconstruction
- hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (IHSS) repair
- multiple valve repair/replacements
- reconstruction for acquired and congenital heart disorders
- valve sparing surgery
- vein graft and harvesting
- minimally invasive options
Aortic
Dissection
- combined vascular aortic cardiac procedures
- urgent and emergent repairs
Arrhythmias
- Surgical treatment options for arrhythmias include isolation
and ablation of arrhythmia sources in the atria or ventricles
using MAZE, cryoablation and epicardial pacemaker therapy.
Congestive Heart Failure
- heart transplantation (with
Tufts-NEMC)
- left ventricular assist devices
- left ventricular remodeling surgery
- mitral valve repairs
- off bypass limited procedures
Minimally Invasive Procedures
Rhode Island Hospital has an active minimally invasive cardiothoracic
surgery program, offering multiple types and techniques. This
has been a major focus of our program for the past five years.
- cosmetically appealing approaches for cardiac surgery in young
adults
- minimal access mitral and aortic valve replacements
- off bypass CABG (beating heart surgery)
- partial sternotomy for aortic valve replacement
