Ultrasound Biopsy and Radiofrequency Ablation 


Routine Preparations

The week before:

  1. Stop taking aspirin or aspirin products (Bufferin, Excedrin, Ecotrin, etc.) For 7 days before the procedure.

  2. If you take coumadin or warfarin (blood thinners), they should be stopped 7 days before the procedure and a blood test (prothrombin time) should be drawn 2 days before the procedure. These test results should be faxed to the ultrasound section at 401-444-7729.

  3. Stop taking anti-inflammatory medications (i.e., motrin (ibuprofen), indocin, Naprosyn, etc.) 2 days prior to the procedure. It is okay to take Tylenol (acetaminophen).

  4. IMPORTANT: If you take aspirin or blood thinners (i.e., coumadin) less than 7 days before the procedure, please call the secretary at 401-444-5309 as the procedure will need to be rescheduled for a later date.

  5. If your doctor ordered blood tests that were done outside of Rhode Island Hospital, bring the results with you or have them faxed to our department at 401-444-7729.

  6. If you have outside x-ray tests such as a CT scan, MRI scan, ultrasound or plain x-ray, please bring them with you.

  7. If you are having a prostate biopsy, your doctor will give you a prescription for antibiotics to be taken before and after the procedure.

The night before:

  1. Do not eat solid foods after midnight.

The day of the procedure:

  1. The morning of the procedure, have clear liquids such as tea, apple juice or water (no solid foods) if you are having a biopsy. Do not drink liquids if you are having a radiofrequency ablation.

  2. Take your regular medications (except for those listed above) with a sip of water in the morning.

  3. Bring x-ray studies and blood test results with you to the hospital.

  4. If you have trouble understanding English, bring a family member or a friend who can translate for you.

  5. At the hospital, first report to the second floor of the APC building to register for your exam and receive your blue card.

  6. After receiving your blue card, go to the ultrasound department located on the second floor of the George Building.

  7. The procedure and recovery time usually take up to 5 hours (but may vary depending on the type of procedure you are having performed).

  8. You will need somebody to drive you home and be with you the night after the procedure.
