Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection in women. BV occurs when bacteria in the vagina becomes overgrown.

Symptoms of BV

  • White or gray vaginal discharge that may have an unpleasant odor
  • Burning during urination
  • Itching around the vagina

Prevent BV

  • Abstain from sex or be in a monogamous relationship
  • Do not douche
  • Do not use an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control

Treatment of BV includes:

  • Antibiotics: metronidazole or clindamycin
  • Finish all of the prescribed medicine, even if symptoms go away
  • BV may recur after treatment
