Bradley Hospital
FireSafe Families Program
Helping
children and families with fire-safe choices
FireSafe Families is a family-centered program that provides fire
safety education and group counseling to children and adolescents
who are at risk of setting fires. FireSafe Families also educates
the parents/guardians of at-risk children. FireSafe Families education
and group counseling is offered at no charge to children and their
families.
Children who have set a fire or who have played with matches and/or
flammable materials within the last six months are considered at
risk and are eligible to take part in the project. These children
may be living at home with their families or residing in a hospital
inpatient unit or residential program.
Children and their parents/guardians will learn:
- risk factors for fire-setting behaviors
- the principles of fire prevention
- fire safety strategies
- how to recognize the thoughts and feelings that lead to fire-starting
behaviors
- problem-solving skills that help children make better choices
about fire and flammables
- to use problem-solving skills to ensure fire safety at home
and in the community
