Description
Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant
medications have been found to be effective for some depressed adolescents,
almost 40% of depressed adolescents will not respond to this treatment.
There are no current guidelines to recommend treatment for this
group of depressed patients. In this project, adolescents ages 12-18
will be assigned to treatment which will consist of medication or
medication plus cognitive behavioral therapy.
Significance
Untreated or partially treated depression is a major public health
problem and can have serious consequences. By determining new treatment
options, this study will have a potentially large impact on the
standards of care for adolescents with depression.
