Symptom Perception in Pediatric Asthma

Description
This project seeks to determine how well children with asthma can
recognize that their lungs are compromised by asthma symptoms. We
have found that children who are poor at recognizing pulmonary changes
have more emergency department visits and miss more school. Psychological
variables such as intelligence and attention predict which children
are better or worse at symptom perception. Interesting technological
advances allow us to quantify symptom perception ability with confidence.
Significance
This line of research can improve asthma management and may even
reduce asthma deaths if we are able to help children recognize their
symptoms earlier.
