Funding Source
This is a pilot study.

Description
This project will determine the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a distressing and impairing preoccupation with an imagined or slight defect in appearance, in consecutively admitted adolescent inpatients over a six-month period. Rates of BDD found through this systematic screening procedure will be compared to the prevalence based on clinician-based routine diagnostic procedures, and will also be compared to previously established rates of BDD in adult populations. Gender differences will also be examined. Other clinical variables, including anxiety, depression, anger, suicidality and post-traumatic stress disorder, will also be examined in relation to BDD.

Significance
This line of research can improve detection of BDD in adolescents and help to better understand associated clinical characteristics in order to improve treatment and outcomes for patients suffering with this often debilitating disorder.
