Description
This program was created in partnership with the Rhode Island Juvenile Drug Court. This five-session program is an adaptation of the Therapeutic Schools Affect Management and HIV prevention project for substance abusing juvenile offenders. This project will compare an Affect Management intervention that targets emotion regulation as related to sexual/HIV risk, alcohol and drug use to a General Health promotion intervention that targets smoking, other dietary habits and exercise for adolescents enrolled in the Juvenile Drug court program.
Significance
Emotion regulation in sexual and substance abusing situations is an important component of decreasing both types of risk behaviors. Providing emotion regulation skills training to substance-abusing juvenile offenders will decrease the incidence of HIV and substance use behaviors among these at-risk adolescents.
