Description
This project develops and evaluates a specific family-based treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) during early childhood (five to eight years of age). This study is currently in its last phase. Phase one included the creation and development of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) manual and a comparison relaxation training manual. A pilot study then tested the relaxation treatment and the family-based CBT in a small number of children (N=12). The final stage involves treating a larger group of children (N=30) with this new and specialized family-based CBT treatment.

Significance
To date, there have been no psychotherapy trials focused on children of this age with OCD, despite the fact that the illness often begins at this young age. Early childhood OCD treatments need to be developed, as they currently do not exist-especially treatments involving the family.
