This is a pilot study.

Description
A retrospective study of more than 300 adolescent inpatients examining the prevalence and severity of non-suicidal, self-injurious behavior (such as cutting) among adolescent inpatients. Inpatients with a history of self-injurious behaviors endorsed on their medical charts or background forms are reviewed and classified by cutting behaviors. The study also examines relationships between these behaviors and other clinical data (i.e., self-report measures, diagnostic interviews, and consensus diagnoses).

Significance
This study will help to better understand the demographic, clinical, and diagnostic characteristics of those adolescents who engage in self-injurious behaviors in order to guide assessment and treatment of these adolescents.
