Description:
Research has shown that parent and “family” involvement are crucial to diabetes care. Yet, with very few exceptions, research on “family” factors has ignored siblings. This study will explore aspects of siblings’ relationships (such as birth order, closeness and conflict) and how siblings may support or hinder diabetes care. Finally, this study will examine how sibling relationships and involvement in care influence glycemic control and quality of life in the child with diabetes.
Significance:
The demands of diabetes and its treatment exert significant stress on the lives of pediatric patients and their families. Since siblings represent a fundamental part of family life, their roles in diabetes care are likely to be significant. However, siblings’ actual contribution to the child’s diabetes control and quality of life has not been studied. This study will lay the groundwork for developing more potent family-based interventions that mobilize the resources of the whole family.
