Description
Having a brother or sister with a chronic illness or disability is associated with more psychological stress and adjustment problems. What we know about sibling adjustment, however, is based almost exclusively on families of European-American descent. We know very little about how cultural factors affect sibling and family adjustment. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Latino social and cultural factors on sibling functioning.

Significance
At almost 40 million people, Latinos are now the largest minority group in the US. Latino families have more children and are at greater risk for chronic illness and disability than other groups. Therefore, Latino families will be increasingly present in health care, educational, and social service settings. The results of this study will increase our understanding of the needs of Latino families and help develop more culturally-appropriate services.
