Description
This project examines whether healthy brothers and sisters of children with autism spectrum disorders and diabetes are at greater risk than other children for developing physical symptoms and poor health. A second goal is to identify characteristics of siblings and parents that are associated with better adjustment and fewer physical symptoms. Finally, this project will help develop prevention and treatment programs for siblings.

Significance
Children with excessive physical symptoms are at greater risk for having problems in their school and social functioning and tend to use more health care and mental health services. This research can help find ways to identify siblings who may be at higher risk for developing physical symptoms. These results will hopefully provide guidance to parents and professionals about how to prevent these problems in siblings of children with medical and developmental problems.
