Immunizing Against Tobacco Use in Pediatric Health Care
Raymond Niaura, Ph.D. (PI) Alessandra Kazura, MD (Co-I)
Prevention of tobacco use is a national priority and is the focus of this proposal. Traditional tobacco prevention interventions fail to adequately reach low-income, high-risk youth from culturally diverse backgrounds. RISSE for Youth (RI Stop Smoking Education for Youth) targets children between the ages of 8 and 13 years. Children, with a parent/guardian, are recruited in a pediatric clinic that serves a multicultural population. Tailored counseling, delivered by a health educator, is being compared to brief health care provider advice.
Honors
Citation for Outstanding Service from the R.I. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (2000)
