Physician Licensing Requirements

Many states require CME credit for physician licensing. Following is an outline of local requirements and links to more information.

Rhode Island

A new law requires physicians to renew their applications every two years beginning July 1, 2004. After July 1, 40 hours of CME will be required for the 2006 renewal and every two years following. The July 1, 2004 renewal form will require a demonstration of 60 hours for the preceding three years under the law existing at the time, all of which have to be Category I AMA approved, with two of the 60 in Universal Precautions.

Massachusetts

During each two-year licensing cycle, physicians must earn a minimum of 100 credit hours, at least 40 of which must be in category I. The remainder may be in either category I or II. The 100-hour requirement must include 10 credit hours of risk management study, at least four hours of which must be in category I activities. The 100 hours must also include two hours studying the Massachusetts Board of Regulation in Medicine's regulations.
