Eating out the guilt-free way
Chinese food
- Whet your appetite with steamed raviolis, chicken teriyaki, wonton
soup, chicken or shrimp stir-fry packed with steamed fresh
vegetables
- Choose dishes with vegetables as a main ingredient, or ask for extra vegetables when ordering. Avoid vegetables in sauces, as these can be as salty and calorie-packed as the meat and noodle dishes.
- Steer clear of duck, egg foo young, and sauces, as well as meat and noodle dishes.
- Healthy choices in Chinese restaurants vary from the fajita-like moo
shu shrimp or vegetables, to the staple steamed white rice, to
pineapples and lychee nuts as beneficial dessert picks.
- Choose brown rice over white rice.
- Ask for stir-fried or braised meat, seafood or tofu instead of the fried variety. Restaurants may be able to substitute these in your favorite dishes.
- Learn to use chopsticks: They will help you eat more slowly and avoid excess sauce.
Chinese foods often contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), so order your
meal without it. Another tip to cut the salt: try to go without duck, soy and hoisin sauces, and hot mustard.
