IMRT:
Revolutionary Radiation Therapy
Rhode Island Hospital was the third site in New England to use
intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a state-of-the-art
external radiation treatment.
"IMRT can be used for almost every site in the
body," says Rhode Island Hospital radiation oncologist Thomas
DiPetrillo, MD. "We anticipate that IMRT will be the preferred method
of therapy, replacing all types of external radiation treatment, within
the next five to 10 years."
IMRT is a noninvasive procedure that allows for
pinpoint delivery of radiation therapy, resulting in better tumor control
with less toxicity. In the past, Rhode Island
Hospital patients requiring IMRT had been transported to New England
Medical Center in Boston, which has had the high-tech treatment for five
years. New England Medical Center was one of the first four sites in the
world to utilize this revolutionary treatment under the direction of David
Wazer, MD, Lifespan's chief of radiation oncology.
