Orthopedics
About Us
The Miriam was one of the first hospitals in the state to pioneer the use of ceramic-to-ceramic hip replacements, a longer-lasting alternative to the conventional metal-to-polyurethane joint. The first artificial disk replacement in Rhode Island was also performed at the hospital in 2005, relieving the chronic, disabling pain of degenerative disk disease.
As the science of orthopedics has become enormously complex and sophisticated, the specialty has evolved into a number of subspecialties, each demanding a comprehensive knowledge of the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of orthopedic problems involving bones, joints, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and muscles in a specific area of expertise.
Orthopedic physicians on The Miriam Hospital’s medical staff, many on the faculty at Brown Medical School, take leadership roles in advancing their science.
In addition to caring for patients and teaching medical residents, some of The Miriam Hospital’s orthopedists are conducting scholarly research in topics like tissue engineering, biologic enhancement of bone fusion, and cartilage growth and transplantation. Orthopedic attending physicians at The Miriam Hospital are also assigned rotating emergency room responsibilities, and are experienced in caring for traumatic injuries as well as chronic orthopedic conditions.
