Our Awards
Lifespan’s accomplishments are reflected in the numerous awards
it has earned, including:
- 100 Most Wired Award – Carole Cotter, SVP and CIO
(2005, 2004, 2003, 2002)
25 Most Wireless Award (2005, 2004, 2003) Lifespan has won
the 100 Most Wired Award for four years, and has won the 25 Most
Wireless Award each year since the category was created in 2003.
Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN) annually surveys
the nation’s health care systems on their use of high-tech
communications, and its “Most Wired” status is awarded
to what they call “technically savvy” hospitals.
- Computerworld Honors Program (2005), Finalist for 21 st Century
Achievement Award
Lifespan was named one of 48 finalists nationwide for its visionary
use of information technology, specifically wireless technology,
in the Medicine category. The Honors Program identifies the men
and women, organizations and institutions who are leading the
technology revolution and records the impact of their achievements
on society. Lifespan’s case study on its wireless technology
is now a permanent part of the Global Archives, archived in libraries,
museums, and academic and research institutions around the world.
- InformationWeek 500 list (2004)
Lifespan was named to the InformationWeek 500 list of “Top
Innovators” for its use of technology – ranking among
Fortune 500 companies such as General Electric, Hewlett-Packard,
Wal-Mart Stores, Citigroup and Marriott International. The magazine
selects “the most innovative users of business technology.”
Companies were selected based on management priorities, technology
strategies, staffing initiatives and budget plans. The list spans
21 industries, including: insurance; banking and financial services;
electronics; automotive; manufacturing; consumer goods; health
care and medical; and information technology. Lifespan was one
of 32 leaders in the “Health Care & Medical” category.
- CIO 100 Award – Carole Cotter, SVP and CIO (2004, 2002)
- Most Agile 100 (2004)
Lifespan earned this award for its Computerized Physician
Order Entry system, enabled by a wireless network; and its
new contract management application, which created a $17 million
improvement in payments. The winners were selected for “their
ability to react quickly to rapidly changing situations and
environments while positively contributing to their own organization’s
development of new growth opportunities. The CIO 100 recipients
represent the highest standards of competence, creativity,
leadership and accomplishment in the information technology
(IT) field.”
- Enterprise Integration: The Integration
Imperative (2002)
The award is given to companies that demonstrate impressive
progress toward enterprise integration, bringing information
from various sources into a single view. Other winners of
the 2002 award were: CISCO, Dell, Dow Chemical, GE, IBM, MetLife,
Royal Bank of Canada, Italy’s Perilli, S.p.A., and Wal-Mart.
Lifespan was the only health care system to be recognized
in 2002.
- CEO IT Achievement Award – George A. Vecchione, President
and CEO (2003)
Lifespan President and CEO George A. Vecchione won the CEO IT
Achievement Award, sponsored by Modern Healthcare and the Chicago-based
Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
The award recognizes one or more health care industry CEOs who
demonstrate leadership and commitment to using information technology
to advance their health care organization’s strategic goals.
- Healthcare Informatics Information Technology Innovators
Award – Carole Cotter, SVP and CIO (2003)
The Healthcare Informatics editorial team invited its
editorial board, research panel and members of the College of
Healthcare Information Management Executives to nominate individuals
they believed had shown outstanding IT talent – particularly
vision, strategy, leadership and implementation abilities. From
the nominations, editors chose, with extra value going to visions
that could be extended beyond the organization involved, nine
recipients for the second Annual Healthcare IT Innovators Award.
- VHA Northeast Leadership Innovation Award – Carole
Cotter, SVP and CIO (2002)
This IT Innovation Award honors VHA Northeast organizations
exhibiting leadership and innovation while implementing information
technology improvements that make a significant difference and
are widely diffused throughout the organization.
- CHIME (College of Healthcare Information Management Executives)
Innovation of the Year Award – Carole Cotter, SVP and CIO
(2002)
The College created the Innovation of the Year Award to honor
and recognize health care CIOs who are using IT applications in
creative and exciting new ways in their organizations. The award
provides peer recognition for CIOs who have demonstrated value
to their organization through the creative application of technology
in support of their organization’s key and strategic business
objectives. It also provides an opportunity for innovative solutions
to be openly shared with the College membership for possible application
in other healthcare environments.
