Don't
Lag Behind
Has jet setting got you jet lagged?
Jet lag is the exhausted, run-down feeling you may experience after
a long flight. It can be brought on by a number of different factors,
from stress of getting situated in new surroundings and time zones,
to mental and physical exhaustion. Jet lag is your body's natural
reaction to over stimulation; it usually goes away after a good
night's rest.
Helpful Tips for Preventing Jet Lag
The next time you board an airplane, here are some tips help prevent
the feeling of lagging behind:
- Try stretching exercises. Cramped seating can lead to
cramped muscles. While sitting in your seat, try stretching your
arms over your head or straigtening your legs out as far as you
can in front of you. Stretching also helps prevent deep
vein thrombosis.
- Yawn or chew gum. Do your ears pop when flying? To avoid
pressure build-up in the ears, try chewing gum or yawning to alleviate
the problem. More about air pressure and
your ears.
- Avoid alcohol and coffee before and during your flight: Because
your body is already going through an adjustment when traveling,
substances like caffeine or alcohol can aggrevate the symptoms
of jet lag.
- Wear comfortable clothes: You always want to look your
best, but when flying, the best thing your can do for yourself
is dress comfortably.
- Be well rested: Whether you are heading to your destination
or coming back from a week in paradise, make sure you get a good
night's rest before heading out.
- Set your watch to the time of your destination: If your
destination includes being in a different time zone, it's a good
idea to set your watch to familiarize yourself with the time change.
- Eliminate stress and anxiety: Flying may be a daunting
experience but try to alleviate as much stress and anxiety as
you can. While you are waiting to board, breathing exercises,
diving into a good book, solving crossword puzzles or thinking
about the fun you'll have on vacation are great ways to alleviate
stress and anxiety before your flight.
