Musician Michael Brelser shares his expertise, working with small groups
or one on one with patients in the Music on Rounds Program.
The main focus of the program is to involve, entertain and interact with
patients, families and staff. The musician visits all areas of the hospital,
from the pre-op area to the emergency department, using music to soothe
children who face the daunting prospect of such procedures as a bone marrow
aspiration, to comfort those who miss the familiar sights and sounds of
home, and to foster awareness of how music expresses feelings words are
not able to convey.
Michael Bresler brings a variety of music to the patients. It may be
quiet flute and guitar music to calm and relax patients or drumming and
singing for more active participation. Listening to live music or participating
in making music can be very beneficial to both children and families.
Children dealing with the stress of hospitalization get so involved in
"making music" that they may begin to smile, laugh and soon
forget their pain and medical problems. These effects often continue after
the music session has ended.
