Certified Nursing Assistant

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) provide patient care under the supervision of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. Certified nursing assistants work in hospitals, nursing homes and for home care providers. CNAs earn approximately $22,600 a year.

Job responsibilities

Administer direct physical care to patients such as bathing, feeding and assisting in hygienic care.
Communicate with patients to provide social interaction.
Promote and maintain an environment conducive to the patient's physical and psychological comfort and safety.
Assist with selected diagnostic and nursing care procedures.
Report all pertinent observations of the patients' conditions.
Record selected treatments and procedures for which he or she is responsible.

Community College of Rhode Island
- 120-hour Certificate Program
- 88 hours classroom; 32 hours clinical in a nursing facility

Licensure requirements:

Completion of at least 100 hours of an approved training course.
Pass a competency examination administered by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
