New ESL Classes for Foreign-Trained Professionals

After years of dedication and hard work, you’ve made your professional dream come true: you’ve earned distinction as a physician, engineer or lawyer. When you move to the United States, however, you discover that achievement doesn’t translate into employment—you can't get a job because you can't speak English.

This is the plight of many foreign trained professionals, including many at Lifespan. In response, the Lifespan Learning Institute (LLI) now offers ESL classes at the basic and intermediate levels. Designed for foreign-trained professionals (who must have a degree to enroll), the classes focus on job-specific needs, and serve to help break an important barrier to obtaining proper employment in the United States.

With the new ESL courses, LLI is helping to advance both Lifespan employees and others across the state toward their professional goals in the United States. Senior organizational consultant Carolyn Piatek says, “The opportunities are endless. We hope to eventually offer one-on-one coaching for pronunciation, and we will soon open a learning lab in the Claverick Building, where students can obtain numerous resources to further assist them in learning English.”

In the basic ESL course, students develop fundamental English skills in an interactive, comfortable classroom setting. Coursework emphasizes skills necessary for effective oral and written communication. In the intermediate ESL course, students continue to focus on grammar, reading, speaking, listening and writing skills, including the comprehension of simple text, and developing writing skills from sentence construction to paragraph composition.

Students should already have a limited command of the English language, and a college degree to enroll in both courses. The intermediate course builds on the basic. Classes for both levels meet twice each week for six weeks throughout the fall, and will be held in the Coro Building in Providence. For more information or to find out if you are eligible, please call the Lifespan Learning Institute at 401-444-8353.
