Lifespan Physician Profile
Barbara Roberts, MD, FACC
Barbara
Roberts, MD, FACC, is director of the Women's Cardiac Center at
The Miriam Hospital.
Roberts has long been interested in women's health issues. She
was the first female adult cardiologist in the state and was the
first woman accepted into the Gorlin cardiology fellowship at the
Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a Harvard University Medical School
Teaching Hospital.
Roberts was also among the first group of Ms. Magazine's
"Found Women" and was chosen by the Rhode Island Medical
Women's Association as the Woman Physician of the Year 2000. She
is currently president-elect of the Rhode Island Medical Women's
Association, which is a local affiliate of the national association.
"When I came to Rhode Island in 1977 specialized cardiac care
for women was non-existent," says Roberts. "There is much
that women can and should do to lower their risk of heart disease
and live longer, healthier lives. This center is a good first step
in that direction for women in Rhode Island."
The Women's Cardiac Center offers diagnostic and clinical cardiology
services. Women also have access to other cardiac services at the
hospital such as cardiac surgery, angioplasties and stent and cardiac
rehabilitation when indicated. Each patient is also offered a meeting
with a behavioral medicine specialist to help her assess and modify
her lifestyle to live a longer, healthier life.
