Lifespan Physician Profile
Franklin Schneider, MD, FACC
Franklin
Schneider, MD, FACC, is a cardiologist at The Miriam and Newport
hospitals. A graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine,
Schneider completed his postdoctoral training at Lemuel Shattuck
and Faulkner hospitals in Boston and Lahey Clinic in Burlington,
Mass. He is currently the director of non-invasive imaging at the
Cardiovascular Associates of Rhode Island.
Schneider sees health as a continuum: the choices
patients make today affect their future. A believer in preventive maintenance, Schneider says, "people
should treat their health issues before they become major
problems." He also believes people can significantly improve
their overall health by modifying their behaviors.
"I have always been impressed with how much improvement
patients can make by quitting smoking, changing their diet, and
exercising regularly. The key is getting the patient to realize
how much of an impact they can truly have on their own
health."
Schneider is an expert in non-invasive diagnosis of
heart problems; in particular, echocardiography, an ultrasound of
the heart. Such procedures enable physicians to examine the
structure and function of the heart, allowing them to better
understand a variety of cardiac problems.
In collaboration with three of his colleagues, Schneider is
writing an instructional DVD to educate physicians about
intraoperative echocardiography during cardiac surgery. One of
Schneider's special interests is reconstructive cardiac
surgery, during which heart valves are repaired rather than
replaced. Working closely with the heart surgeons, he performs
intraoperative echoes during heart surgery.
