The director of Lifespan's Hallett Diabetes Center, Robert
Smith, MD, is director of Rhode Island Hospital's division of
endocrinology and a professor of medicine at Brown Medical
School.
Smith is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed
postdoctoral training at Duke University, the National Institutes
of Health and the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is
a diabetologist/ endocrinologist and an internationally
recognized diabetes research scientist.
Formerly an academic leader at the Joslin Diabetes Center in
Boston, Smith joined Rhode Island Hospital to develop a
comprehensive diabetes program that includes patient care,
clinical research, basic research and teaching. The Hallett
Diabetes Center, which plans to open its patient care programs in
early 2002, will be the first comprehensive academic diabetes
center in the state.
Smith has conducted extensive research on abnormalities of
insulin action that are important causal factors in diabetes. He
also has made many significant contributions to the current
understanding of the role of growth factors and nutrients in
supporting normal body growth and preventing excessive breakdown
of body tissues during severe illness.
