The Miriam Hospital Campaign for the Next Generation Goes Public

“My generation understands that the hospital was a gift to our community and takes very seriously its responsibility to ensure that The Miriam continues to provide clinical excellence and compassionate care for generations to come.”

On September 8, 2005, The Miriam Hospital hosted an event to celebrate the launch of the public phase of the $35 million capital improvement campaign: The Miriam Hospital Campaign for the Next Generation.

One hundred and seventy-five supporters gathered under a tent in the Summit Street visitor’s parking lot to celebrate. The event began with the dedication of the new Koffler Bornstein Family Entryway at the main hospital entrance. Following the dedication, the celebration continued with a cocktail reception, speaking program and a dinner of delicacies.

Jeffrey G. Brier, chairman of the Board of Trustees, opened the speaking program with reflections on the philanthropic beginnings of The Miriam Hospital almost eighty years before. “Philanthropy is the conduit that enabled The Miriam to grow from a 63-bed hospital to a prominent 247- bed academic hospital,” he said. “My generation understands that the hospital was a gift to our community and takes very seriously its responsibility to ensure that The Miriam continues to provide clinical excellence and compassionate care for generations to come.”

Kathleen C. Hittner, MD, president and CEO of The Miriam Hospital, then introduced a campaign video. The video expressed through images and testimonials the ways in which the community has truly been the backbone of The Miriam Hospital, as well as how the people at The Miriam make it such a special place.

In addition to the video, the speaking program included comments from David Rampone, Tina Odessa and Robert Bahr, MD, who gave accounts of their experiences at The Miriam. Each one spoke of the warmth, expertise and exceptional care that distinguish the hospital. David Rampone, a Miriam Hospital governor and member of the hospital construction committee, spoke of undergoing surgery at the hospital. Having had a negative experience at another hospital, Rampone was amazed by the personalized treatment and exceptional care he encountered at The Miriam.

“After my surgery, there was a nurse there to assure me that everything had gone well, that she would be there to help and I could count on her if I needed anything. That same routine was repeated the next four times I had surgery at The Miriam,” Rampone said. “The Miriam is now one of my most important charities. Everything that they do is done with the same thought in mind, and that is how to do it as well as possible.”

As a result of the generosity of our donors, the hospital has raised $13 million toward its goal!
