The Samuel and Esther Chester Immunology Center at The
Miriam Hospital
Fundamental to the success of the center is the philosophy that clinical care is
enriched by research, and that research is informed by clinical
experience. The HIV care and research program at the Immunology Center has grown
considerably since its founding in 1986 by C.J. Carpenter, MD.
The Immunology Center provides:
- Comprehensive care for HIV-infected patients.
- A special program
for women in which case management, clinical trials and gynecological
care, including colposcopy, are all offered, and childcare is available.
- HIV care that is linked to the community at the state prison (ACI),
substance abuse treatment sites (SSTAR) and in Fall River and Newport with
state-of-the-art hospital-based care.
- The opportunity for patients to enroll in pharmaceutically
and federally sponsored clinical trials.
- Intensive adherence interventions using a pilot program of
directly observed therapy for substance abuse patients.
- An adolescent HIV clinic for intensive care and support.
- Free active outreach care and HIV/STD prevention for substance abusers
(particularly heroin and cocaine needle users) at a South
Providence site, offered in collaboration with AIDS Care Ocean State.
- Participation in four federally funded HIV prevention programs for
men and women leaving prison, adolescents and high-risk
women. In collaboration with Kenneth Mayer, MD, the
center has participated in the NIH-sponsored HIVNET (HIV prevention)
program.
- An education site for the Brown University AIDS Program. The Fogarty
Program for clinicians and scholars from the developing world is committed to AIDS work, as
are Brown Medical School students,
residents and fellows.
