Nursing at The Miriam Hospital
A
Culture of Caring
Respect for the Past, Commitment to the Future.
From its earliest days at the turn of the last century to its current
status as a respected, vital medical facility and major teaching
hospital for Brown University Medical School, The Miriam Hospital's
tradition has been one of caring, compassion and the very best clinical
services.
The Miriam's roots go back to the 1890s and 1900s, when a few Jewish
women began collecting pennies, nickels and dimes to fund medical
and dental care and other health-related services for recently arrived
Jewish immigrants who for one reason or another could not always
receive the treatment they required. By the 1920s four buildings
on Parade Street were purchased, and these became The Miriam's first
permanent home. By 1966, operations were moved to our present site.
Services for which The Miriam is best known today include:
- Cardiac Services
Our cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and experts in
therapy, rehab and education offer more ways than ever to prevent
and treat heart disease, the most prevalent health problem in
America today.

- Nursing
The key to our past, present and future was, is and will
always be the superior quality of our nursing. We employ over
370 RNs, as well as LPNs and nursing assistants. Over the years
our nurses have earned us an outstanding reputation in the community
and the region, along with many awards, including in 2003 our
third consecutive Magnet Recognition
for Excellence in Nursing Services, the highest level of recognition
the American Nurses Credentialing Center can award.
This is why, for nursing professionals, The Miriam will always
be a magnet.
