The Miriam Hospital
Pain Control
What else can you tell me about treating pain?
We know that poor pain control can affect your quality of life. Being in pain
can affect your physical, emotional and spiritual health. It is important for
all of us to work together to get the best level of comfort possible for your
condition.
-
Please be sure to report any drug allergies you know about. It's important for
you to know that many people think they have a drug allergy when they have only
had a common side effect like nausea or a feeling of drowsiness or confusion.
Your health care team can help you recognize allergic reactions.
-
Pain control is important to your total treatment plan. So we hope that you won't
be afraid of taking pain medications ordered by your doctor. Many patients and
families worry about side effects and dangers of pain medication. We will
monitor you closely. Please feel free to discuss any concerns with your health
care team.
-
Please ask your team all your questions about taking pain medications. Ask them
to explain the expected side effects and what can be done about them. Talk to
them if you are worried about addiction, because that's something you shouldn't
have to worry about when you're in pain.
-
If you have a history of chemical or drug dependence your team should be told.
It is important that we discuss it so we can plan what is best for you.
