The Miriam Hospital
Pain Control
Special Cases
- Older persons
Treating pain in an older person is very important. We don't want you to
think that you cannot take pain medication. Regardless of your age, feel free to
speak up and ask questions.
Even though we know we may need to go more slowly and gently, older persons
can be treated for pain like all other patients.
- Patients who cannot report their pain
Patients who cannot report pain will not be left without care. We consider
the reason a person needs treatment and use that information to begin to plan
for pain management. We use our knowledge about pain and its effects on vital
signs and behavior to guide us. Information we receive from family
or others who know the patient well is also very helpful.
