David E. Wazer, MD serves concurrently as professor and chairman of the departments of radiation oncology at both Tufts University and Brown University. He is radiation oncologist-in-chief at Tufts Medical Center, Rhode Island Hospital, and Women and Infants Hospital.
Wazer is recognized for expertise in the application of new technology in the field of radiation oncology. He has published more than 200 scientific articles, and has edited several books including Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (first and second edition) and Image-guided IMRT. In addition, he is co-editor of Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology, Sixth Edition, the widely recognized premier textbook of radiation oncology.
Wazer is editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Clinical Oncology and serves as an associate editor of the journals Brachytherapy, Frontiers in Radiation Oncology, and Breast Diseases: a Yearbook Quarterly. He is principal investigator on a number of research grants related to the study of image-guided radiation therapy, electronic brachytherapy, partial breast irradiation and hyperthermia.
Wazer is board certified in therapeutic radiology by the American Board of Radiology. He earned his medical degree (with honors) from the New York University School of Medicine. On completion of medical school, he performed a research fellowship in neurochemistry at New York University. He obtained his clinical training in internal medicine at Brown University and in radiation oncology at Tufts University. He has held a number of faculty and research positions at Tufts, Brown and MIT. Wazer has been a member of several national and international advisory committees related to the science and technology of radiation oncology.
Wazer's current areas of clinical research include the study of the efficacy, toxicity and cost/utility analysis of image-guided radiation therapy, partial breast irradiation, brachytherapy, and hadron therapy. He is actively involved in the development of clinical trials for cancers of the breast, skin, GI tract and lung.
Wazer is a Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology and is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, Radiation Research Society, American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the American Radium Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Brachytherapy Society.
