    As a health care system, we collect enormous quantities of information to treat our patients – diagnostic tests, treatments provided, and the symptoms or incidents that call for them. For the past two years, we have been completely transforming and re-building Lifespan’s entire information technology platform and infrastructure under the banner of the massive project we have referred to as “Epic” (reflecting the name of the primary vendor).  I am pleased to let you know that our new clinical information system will be called LifeChart.

    The new name reflects both the fact that it is specific to Lifespan and that we have undertaken this vast project to comprehensively chart our patients’ care and health condition and in doing so, improve each patient’s care.

    Our new system will create a single record for each patient that may be accessed by clinicians throughout Lifespan. One great advantage of the new system is that all of the patient’s information will be in one place; people will no longer have to click in and out of different systems to find information, as they do now.  Community physicians will be able to view information about patients who have had inpatient stays or outpatient visits at Lifespan facilities. Our patients will be able to access their own information through a portal that we will be promoting in the months to come. Our research enterprise will be enhanced by identifying more easily patients who are suitable for appropriate clinical trials. We will be the only health care system in the state that will have a single enterprise electronic health record that spans both inpatient and outpatient services—a distinction that affirms our commitment to meeting the health needs of our community.  

    LifeChart

    Our new system has been called the best available today, and after evaluating various systems, we agree.  That does not mean, however, that the build and implementation process has been easy. It’s been two years of hard work for our various teams, who have built programs to support our redesigned care processes and redesigned workflows—all with the primary goal of better patient care and a better work environment.  I am grateful to the hundreds of people who have spent thousands upon thousands of hours –and continue to work—to make this happen.

    I fully anticipate that the next few months will be challenging for those involved in the launch of the new system and for those learning to use it. But I know we are building something remarkable.  Something that will enhance communication among clinicians, address the fragmentation that hampers optimal care and, in the end, help us better fulfill our new brand mission—Delivering health with care.  I am grateful to our staff for the work that has been done and in advance for the work that lies ahead.
