Thin Ice

It looks inviting but could be dangerous. 

Every winter, the lure of a frozen pond or lake leads to tragedy when someone crashes through thin ice. "Here in Rhode Island, never assume that ice is safe," says John Faltus, deputy chief of parks and recreation at the Department of Environment Management.

Don't forget that:

• It takes several consecutive days of sub-freezing weather to create a thick layer of ice.
• Ice less than six inches thick is dangerous.
• The safest ice is man-made, such as that in skating rinks.
