  • Living with allergies: Dining Out the Allergy-Free Way

  • Whether you have an allergy or intolerance, your best bet is to avoid those foods that wreak havoc on your innards. Here are some tips:

    • When you dine out, inform your host or waiter of any food allergies or intolerances you have before your meal is prepared or before you order.
    • Don't assume that the food you are allergic to isn't an ingredient in what you are about to eat. Ask first and double check.
    • Pay close attention to food labels, including ones on less-noticeable items, such as condiments.
    • Remind your physician of any food allergies you have before he or she prescribes any medication.
    • If you have had a severe allergic reaction to a type of food in the past, ask your physician for a dosage of self-injecting epinephrine. This will help treat severe reactions in the time before emergency medical help arrives.

If you experience symptoms of a food allergy contact your physician immediately.
