Beth Bock, PhD, is an associate professor of
psychiatry and human behavior at Brown Medical School and The Miriam
Hospital. Her primary research interests are in exercise adoption, smoking
cessation interventions, and the use of computer-based technologies in
behavior change. She is currently principal investigator on two NIH funded
studies examining smoking cessation interventions for patients in the
emergency department. She collaborates with Bess Marcus, Ph.D. on research
studies funded by the NIH and the American Heart Association that examine
the efficacy of computer-tailored motivational feedback to promote
exercise behavior change through personal computer and internet delivery
modalities.

Smoking Cessation in Emergency Respiratory Patients
Beth Bock, PhD (PI)
NIH/NHLBI
This study continues and expands investigation of the "teachable
moment" and the factors which motivate smokers to quit. This study
also tests the relative efficacy of two smoking cessation interventions
among patients with acute respiratory illness being treated in an
Emergency Department. Emergency respiratory patients who smoke are
recruited and provided with an individually tailored interview or care as
usual.
Tailored Exercise Support for Cardiac Patients
Beth Bock, PhD, (PI)
NIH/NHLBI
Uses a computer expert system to tailor interventions for cardiac
rehabilitation patients. The goal is to help patients maintain physical
activity following completion of rehabilitation.
Internet and Telephone Treatment for Smokers
Beth Bock, PhD (PI, Sub-contract), Amanda Graham, PhD, (PI)
NIH/NCI
This study examines the incremental efficacy Internet with or
without supplemental telephone counseling for smokers attempting to quit.
