Amy Gorin, PhD, is an assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown Medical School and The Miriam Hospital.  She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2000 and completed her postdoctoral training at Brown Medical School in the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center.  Gorin's research interests are in behavioral treatment approaches to obesity and she has been a Principal Investigator on two obesity-related grants. Her first grant, funded by the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, examined the period after angioplasty as a "teachable moment" for eating and exercise behavior change. Gorin is also Principal Investigator on an NIH grant examining the "ripple effect" of an intensive weight loss program on untreated spouses and the home environment.

The Role of the Home Environment in Weight Loss Maintenance
 Amy Gorin, Ph.D. (PI)

Prior studies of weight control programs have focused their assessments exclusively on the individual participant, perhaps underestimating the positive effects of treatment and overlooking important environmental predictors of weight loss outcomes. This study, funded by NINR, is examining the impact of an intensive weight loss program (Look AHEAD) on untreated spouses and the home environment. A total of 480 participants and their spouses will be recruited from 3 clinical sites (Brown University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Minnesota) and will be assessed at baseline and 1-year follow-up. We will examine whether there is a ripple effect of the intervention on untreated spouses and whether there are environmental factors within the home that are associated with weight outcomes.
