Home-Based Treatment Services
- Intensive Behavioral Treatment (IBT) for Children and Adolescents with Autism
Home-based intensive behavioral treatment (IBT) is able to help up to 25 children with autism. Children admitted to the IBT program are under 4 years of age, have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and have varying degrees of chronic behavior disorders that, if left untreated, would worsen and require more intensive treatment, including psychiatric hospitalization or out-of-home residential placement.
For 20 to 40 hours week, a staff member visits a family’s home and delivers clinical services to the child on a one-on-one basis. The treatment plan is family-oriented, as it includes all family members in the treatment process. This weekly regimen is offered in six-month blocks and is renewable for up to three years.
The national benchmark for out-of-home placement (either psychiatric hospitalization or residential treatment) of children with autism spectrum disorder is twelve to fourteen percent by the age of 15. For children who have gone through our IBT program, that number is significantly lower with only one percent experiencing an out-of-home placement.
- Home-Based Services for Children and Adolescents with Mental Retardation
The center offers a hospital diversion program that serves up to 20 individuals. This service is also a resource for children recently discharged from the hospital. It is used as a preventive measure against the future need for an out-of-home placement.
Typically, a staff member will visit a family’s home Monday through Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. Weekend hours are optional and may be arranged in place of, or in addition to, weekday hours.
Our home-based behavioral health care is funded through the Rhode Island Department of Human Services and state Medicaid for 25 children under age 22 with varying degrees of mental retardation (mild, moderate, severe or profound).
Children and adolescents admitted to the home-based program present with chronic mild to moderate behavior disorders that, if left untreated, would worsen and require more intensive treatment, including hospitalization or residential placement.
