Why is it that so many plant trees under whose branches they will never sit?

That's what Bradley Hospital is all about. It's how we began and how we will continue to grow and make happier, healthier futures for the thousands of children who receive our services each year.

George and Helen Bradley made sure that children suffering as their own daughter did would have a place to come to for comfort and treatment. Emma was a happy, healthy seven year old until she contracted a virus. This illness, in the late 1800s when pediatric medicines were not even thought of, left her mentally and physically impaired for the rest of her life. George and Helen kept Emma at home after searching in vain for a facility in this country or abroad where she could receive treatment.

The Bradleys set up a trust to ensure that no other parent in the region would repeat their bleak search.

They planted the tree that would become the Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital, under whose branches many children and families find comfort.

Bradley Hospital opened in 1931. Since then, well over ten thousand children and families have been the beneficiaries of the services George and Helen thought so important.

If they were to come here today, we think they would be pleased to find their tree standing tall and strong for so many families. You too can help cultivate the tree planted by our first philanthropists—the Bradley family.

In the early days, all expenses for the hospital programs, the buildings and the research were paid through the Bradley Trust. Today, insurances help us maintain the services the community has come to rely on so heavily. But today there are many more children and far more severe issues.

Our work is dependent on people rather than technology. Our staff members are critical to our success, and we will continue to ensure we have the number of staff needed, and that they are the most skilled and dedicated professionals to work with our children and families.

You can help us continue our legacy of research into the treatment of children with severe emotional, behavioral and/or developmental problems. You can help us provide art classes, recreational activities, and technology-the components of our programs that insurances don't cover, though they are among the most important elements of the healing process. You can help us provide a warm and inviting place to comfort our children and families.

Thank you so much for caring and for continuing the Bradley Hospital legacy of philanthropy started by George and Helen Bradley for their daughter Emma.
